Did Russel Cheat?
Yesterday in KKR vs RR match, Andre Russel delivered a variation which I guess no-one would have thought of it before?
Completely fooled the batsman there. He was seeming as if he he was not going to deliver the ball and suddenly the ball comes out and it is considered legal! The batsman, Watson looked surprised and so was I.
According to me, Russel cheated. You cannot fool a batsman like this. I mean cricket is a gentleman's game. These cheap tricks should not be allowed. It should have been a dead ball.
Now, many people started arguing that the batsman also fools the bowler sometimes by playing shots via switch hit and moving in the crease. For me, I think there are variations like the slower delivery, short ball etc. for these strokes to be avoided. And not all batsman have success in hitting these kind of shots. I have only seen Ab De Villiers, Maxwell, Warner, Peitersen and Sachin Tendulkar do that. While what Russel did could be done by any bowler. Yesterday when Suryakumar Yadav tried hitting the dilscoop to Watson, Watson came up with a short ball which was a great come up. Bowling should not be predetermined every time.
Now, what would have happened if Watson would have hit that for a 4 or a 6? Russel would have said that the ball slipped through his hands. And, Watson was also confused that whether it is a dead ball or a legal delivery? Whether should he play or not? This wasn't smart by Russel, in fact, it was a cunning coward move.
And what if a wicket would have fallen on such a delivery, then Watson would have argued. While switch hitting is a smart move, and absolutely no arguments there. the batsman is looking to hit off side, so he can hit it anyways he wants to, as simple as that. Its like a slower delivery variation a bowler which surprises the batsman, the switch hit surprises the bowler.
So, in future if anyone bowls such a delivery, according to me should be considered a dead delivery.
